Upgrade Our Building Accessibility and Safety for Tenants
Upgrade Our Building Accessibility and Safety for Tenants
The Issue
We are a community of tenants, many of us seniors and/or individuals with disabilities, living above the 4th floor of our building and facing significant accessibility challenges daily. Many of us have medical conditions that restrict the use of stairs, making our only option the elevators. Our current condition makes it hard for us to let in visitors or receive deliveries from medical and grocery services due to a lack of indicator of their arrival. Furthermore, the single functioning elevator is insufficient during emergency situations, posing a huge safety risk.
We are therefore petitioning for improvements to not only enhance our quality of life, but also ensure our safety. We are requesting for all tenants to have access to the call services at the front door of our building. We appeal for both elevators to be operational and safe, 24 hours a day and 365 days of the year. We propose for the laundry room to be accessible six days a week until 7 PM. Furthermore, security gates should be open to allow visitors and health care workers until 6PM.
Life in our building currently feels more akin to half-way house standards rather than the respectful conditions for senior and disabled citizens. The Urban Institute reports that 5.5 million Americans choose not to go out, miss medical treatments, or are stressed due to transport difficulty ("How Does Transportation Affordability Vary among Transit-Oriented Developments?"). We can begin changing this right from our building. Sign this petition to ask for necessary improvements to our building's system and ensuring an improved living condition for all its inhabitants.
