I, like thousands of others across the UK, have been forced to make a choice between heating and eating due to the cost of living and energy crises. Over the last two winters, I have not been able to use my storage heaters because they are too expensive to run. This is not a choice that anyone should have to make in 21st Century Britain.

Old storage heaters are not only costly for tenants but also detrimental for our environment. They consume excessive amounts of electricity and contribute significantly towards wastage of energy, exacerbating the climate crisis. According to Energy Saving Trust, replacing an old storage heater with a new high heat retention model could save up to £158 per year on electricity bills (Energy Saving Trust).

Therefore, we urge all housing associations, councils and private landlords across the UK to replace outdated storage heaters with new energy-efficient models as soon as possible. This will alleviate financial pressure on tenants struggling with high heating costs while also reducing our collective carbon footprint.
