Upgrade IIT Delhi's HPC facility with H100 GPU Clusters
The Issue
I recently witnessed the inauguration of the Param Pragya facility at IIT Delhi, with our Prime Minister hailing it as a 'supercomputer'. However, the reality is starkly different. This so-called supercomputer is powered by outdated A100 GPU clusters that are now classified as End-of-Life (EOL). Meanwhile, institutions like Thapar University, Dhirubhai Institute, and even some tier 3 colleges have moved forward, embracing the cutting-edge H100 GPUs. It's disheartening to see that IIIT Delhi, DTU, and the KL Institute have surpassed us in computational capabilities. All this while, IIT Delhi remains stuck on third-generation technology, with crucial support coming to an end soon.
The implications of this technological lag are profound. As a premier institution, IIT Delhi must remain at the forefront of innovation and research. High-performance computing (HPC) is indispensable for advancements in AI research, as well as other computational disciplines. Our students and researchers need access to the best technology available to fuel their creativity and pave the way for breakthroughs. With emerging technologies shaping our world at an unprecedented pace, ensuring that even the most brilliant minds have the power they need to innovate is imperative.
Moreover, we are seeing a global race towards artificial intelligence innovations, and missing out on this opportunity means students and researchers will lose competitive advantage. Faster and more efficient computations lead to more profound discoveries and innovations, which can further cement India's position as a leader in technological advancements.
The solution is straightforward: upgrade IIT Delhi's HPC facilities with state-of-the-art H100 GPU clusters. This will not only align us with our peer institutions but will also provide a competitive edge to our students and faculty. Our current infrastructure limits the scope and scale of research projects, hindering the development of new ideas and technologies. Upgrading to H100 GPUs will open new avenues for academic and research excellence, allowing IIT Delhi to thrive and contribute significantly to national and international technological breakthroughs.
