Why this petition matters

Started by Brian Flynn

We love the Bonita Canyon Sports Park Pickleball Courts. It's a fantastic setup for Pickleball players of all ages and abilities. The City of Newport Beach should be commended for their forward thinking in creating this valuable amenity. However, the current usage policy is in need of revision and updating. The courts are known locally as "drop-in", where you can drop-in by yourself or with others to play pickleball. Present policy allows 2-4 players to hold and play on a court for up to an hour after 12 pm. Since most players want to simply "drop-in" and play with a variety of players you may find yourself sitting and waiting while a court remains occupied for up to an hour. This limits participation for a broader user base to utilize this facility and sometimes leads to misunderstandings as to the rules as they vary from days of the week and time of day.

A simple policy of all courts (1,3,4) being drop-in during approved hours with Court 2 being a "challenge court" at all times. If no one is using the challenge court then it becomes part of the rotation. If paddles are queued  when a game is over all 4 players exit the court and the next 4 players may enter. If no paddles are in the queue then players may continue on the same court until someone enters the queue. If 1, 2, or 3 players are in the queue they may announce they "need 1" (or 2 or 3) to make a foursome.

This is all about inclusivity and allowing the maximum number of interested players the opportunity to play on the pickleball courts at Bonita Canyon Sports Park.

Thank you.
