Update UNMPD's animal welfare procedures
Update UNMPD's animal welfare procedures
The Issue
Animal abuse is a pressing issue that concerns all of us, yet it's disheartening to find that the University of New Mexico Police Department’s (UNMPD) Standard Operating Procedure Manual primarily addresses only the wild animals that pose a threat on campus. There is a glaring omission when it comes to the policy on pets or animals experiencing abuse on campus.
Recently, I approached the house advisor of my dormitory to discuss my concerns about the treatment of animals on campus. Shockingly, I was told that animal control services only respond if a wild animal is seen as a danger. Any pet-related issues are handled personally by housing staff, and often, the concerns raised are minimalized. This procedure is not only inefficient but also severely lacking in addressing the welfare and protection of domestic animals that might suffer from abuse.
It’s imperative to establish a clear and comprehensive policy within the UNMPD that specifically addresses animal abuse on campus. This should include guidelines for intervention by the police and swift coordination with local animal control to ensure abused animals receive the help they need. Every animal deserves to live free from harm and neglect.
Please join me in urging the UNMPD to update their procedures to place a much-needed emphasis on the welfare of all animals, domestic or otherwise, and ensure the safety and well-being of pets within the university's jurisdiction.
