The existing Amber Alert guidelines in Canada are strict about initiating alerts only for cases of known abductions, but there are numerous instances where children with disabilities like Parker’s—those who are highly vulnerable due to their unique needs—go missing. These children are often unable to ask for help themselves or understand dangers, making it crucial for us to act fast.
Statistics show that time is of the essence in missing child cases. According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, 81% of abductions are solved within the first few hours. The quicker the public is informed, the higher the possibility of locating and assisting these children safely back to their families. Therefore, including vulnerable missing children in the Amber Alert could be life-saving.
We propose updating the Amber Alert system in Canada to include alerts for any vulnerable missing child, not just when an abduction is suspected. This update would make it possible for local communities, enforcement agencies, and the general public to respond promptly and effectively when a child is reported missing. Collaboration between social services, medical professionals, and law enforcement can set criteria for such alerts, ensuring they are issued judiciously, while providing hope and actual safety for vulnerable children.
