As a community of ferret owners in South Africa, we are passionate about our pets and wish for the freedom to show them and educate others about these wonderful creatures. However, outdated laws in some provinces prevent us from doing so. Despite the latest invasive species list not classifying ferrets as an invasive mammal, certain areas still uphold old laws that do not align with this classification.

Ferrets are intelligent and sociable animals that have been domesticated for thousands of years. They make excellent pets due to their playful nature and strong bond with their human companions. It is unjust that we cannot legally keep them as pets due to outdated legislation.

We urge the South African government to review these antiquated laws and update them according to current standards, allowing ferret ownership across all provinces. This would bring joy not only to current ferret owners but also open up opportunities for more people to discover the delight of having a ferret as a pet.
