The Issue

updated lights

I wanted to thank the community and everyone who signed this petition. Because of your efforts we finally have some change! A few weeks ago I noticed the city updating the crosswalk signal lights, so now, rather than the one very dim light located at the median, each crosswalk signal lights now has flashing yellow crossing lights. I will say this is a huge step and I have seen some improvement in cars yielding to children walking to school. Driver awareness needs to be increased (across the entire city, I fear) however I can’t help but thank you all who signed for your input, as well as to the city of Fairfield for your attention to this matter.

Our children and all pedestrians should be protected at all costs.

Original Post:

We, the undersigned residents and parents of this community, residing in Central Fairfield are requesting immediate action to improve pedestrian safety at the crosswalk located at the intersection of Webster and Utah Street.

This crosswalk is heavily used by students walking to and from multiple nearby schools, including:

 • Matt Garcia College & Career Academy (within 800 feet)

 • Fairview Elementary School

 • Armijo High School

 • Fairfield Montessori and Fairfield Preschool programs with K–12 attendance

As a parent and resident who walks this route daily by choice, not out of necessity I believe that safe walkability should be a protected right, not a gamble.

Every morning and afternoon, I walk this crosswalk with my children. We’ve had multiple near-misses, where cars have sped through the crosswalk while we were still in it. In some cases, vehicles have come within inches of us, despite the crosswalk lights flashing, simply refusing to stop. It is not uncommon for cars to race through while we’re still halfway across, forcing me to physically shield my children.

We are not alone. Many families in the area walk this route, and each day we wonder whether the next crossing will be the one that ends in tragedy simply because basic safety measures are missing, ignored, or obstructed.

This area is currently dangerous and neglected, with:

 • Obstructed and dim crosswalk warning lights

 • Unmarked or unpaved sidewalk paths

 • Frequent speeding despite the posted 30 MPH zone

 • Drivers routinely failing to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk

We have already submitted a work order ticket with the local police department, but no action has yet been taken.

We respectfully urge the City and appropriate departments to address this issue by:

 • Trimming trees that block crosswalk signage or warning lights

 • Upgrading crosswalk signals with brighter, visible flashing lights

 • Clearly painting or re-marking the crosswalk

 • Paving or maintaining the pedestrian walkway

 • Considering traffic calming measures like speed humps or raised crosswalks

 • Increasing enforcement during peak school travel hours

These solutions are not just improvements—they are protections for hundreds of children and residents who rely on this crosswalk every day. We walk here because we choose to. But we shouldn’t have to choose between our health and our safety.

Thank you for your immediate attention to this pressing community safety concern.

Sincerely,

Parents and Pedestrians of Central Fairfield
