Update Louisiana's School Phone Ban to Allow Use in Break Times

The Issue

**Petition to Change Louisiana's School Phone Ban Law**

We, the students of Louisiana, believe that the current state law prohibiting phone use during school hours is outdated and unnecessarily restrictive. While we understand the intent to minimize distractions during instructional time, the blanket ban on phone use throughout the entire school day hinders our ability to communicate, learn, and feel safe during our breaks.

The current law forces students to turn off their devices for the entire school day, creating several problems:

* Emergency Situations: Without access to our phones, we cannot receive important messages from parents/guardians about changes in after-school plans, family emergencies, or other critical information.

* Missing Opportunities: The strict law prevents us from using our breaks productively – we could be completing homework, studying for tests, or listening to educational content.

* Increased Stress: The inability to communicate or engage in relaxing activities during breaks increases student stress and negatively impacts our mental well-being.

Amending the law to allow phone use during lunch and between classes would have numerous benefits:

* Emergency Contact: We could communicate with parents/guardians in case of emergencies or changes in plans.

* Productive Breaks: We could complete homework, study, or listen to educational content during our free time.

* Relaxation and Well-being: Listening to music, watching videos, or chatting with friends can help reduce stress and improve mood.

* Safety: If instances of bullying or harassment occur, we could discreetly document the behavior for reporting.

To address concerns about distraction and misuse, we propose the following rules:

* Phones must be on silent mode during breaks.

* No phones are allowed in classrooms except with teacher permission.

* No inappropriate or disruptive content is allowed.

* Consequences for breaking these rules could include phone confiscation, detention, or parental contact.

We believe that with reasonable guidelines and consequences in place, the benefits of allowing phone use during lunch and between classes outweigh the potential drawbacks. We urge Louisiana legislators to reconsider the current law and trust students to use their devices responsibly during breaks.

Motive content is allowed.

* Consequences for breaking these rules could include phone confiscation, detention, or parental.
