The Issue

We all struggle daily and whether it is deemed as a disability depends on what? My son requires special accommodations such as hearing aids, speech therapy, behavioral therapy, etc. He did not qualify for SS disability benefits because my husband and I made too much money at the time. Also, 270 days for a determination of benefits is a little extreme!

Families across the nation face significant hardships due to outdated income limits for disability and public assistance programs. Such restrictions deny critical support to those who genuinely need it, simply because their income slightly exceeds arbitrary thresholds that have not been adjusted to align with current economic realities.

The income eligibility criteria fail to account for the real-world expenses families like ours endure while supporting members with disabilities. The costs associated with necessary treatments, therapies, and care are substantial. For example, hearing aids, which are essential for my son, often come with a price tag of thousands of dollars, yet receiving no aid because our income level is just above the current limit is unjust.

Furthermore, these programs operate on timelines that are far too lengthy. A wait of 270 days for a determination can exacerbate financial and emotional stress among families who need prompt assistance. Ensuring timely support is critical for families to manage daily challenges without falling into serious financial distress.

We urge policymakers to reconsider and update the income limits on these essential programs. Aligning the thresholds with inflation and current living costs would provide more equitable access to benefits. Additionally, streamlining the application and approval process to minimize wait times is essential for more meaningful support.

Please help bring this issue to the forefront by signing this petition. Together, we can advocate for change to make these vital programs more fair and more responsive to the needs of the communities they serve.
