UoA Encampment demands

The Issue

We are here to turn attention to where it rightfully belongs: Gaza.

We are now starting peaceful non-violent protests and encampments across our university to make our voices heard and clarify our position condemning Israel for destroying every university in Gaza and slaughtering innocent humans including women, kids, journalists, doctors and the elderly every day without any mercy!

We urge our administration to listen to us and demand an immediate and permanent end to the Israeli military’s ongoing genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.

Our role as students is to protect our university from investing  in Israeli apartheid and stand up with what is right!

This is what we are up for:

  1. Demand our university commit to permanent divestment from Israeli apartheid. This includes updating the investment policy to ensure companies which are on the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) list (https://bdsmovement.net/Act-Now-Against-These-Companies-Profiting-From-Genocide are neither directly invested in, or invested in indirectly through holdings in managed funds, similar to what has been done for fossil fuel divestment.

2. Our university holds contracts for HP to supply both desktop and mobile computing services, with an annual spend of almost £1 million per year. We demand our university do not renew these contracts and move to another supplier. HP operates surveillance and facial recognition technology at the Gaza border, and are directly complicit in maintaining Gaza as an open air prison and concentration camp.

We are also demanding to shut down our Starbucks (as a supplier to Union Brew) and Subway on campus.

3. The business school has recently held events featuring representatives from Barclays, who funds the arms industry, including Elbit systems whose technology is “battle tested” on Palestinians,  to the tune of around £4 billion through investments and financial services. The university must pledge to not get involved with unethical businesses like Barclays and other companies on the BDS list including talks, conferences, workshops, “accelerators” etc.

4. Demand our university to openly CONDEM Israel and release a statement on the on-going genocide. The University must call on the UK government to embargo arms exports to Israel and on the Scottish government to end all Scottish Enterprise grants to arms companies (over £8 million in funding since 2019).

5. We demand the university engage in the call for academic boycott and pledge not to enter into any partnerships with Israeli universities. Any currently existing partnerships must be ended. (https://bdsmovement.net/academic-boycott

6. The University must call on Police Scotland to end its contract with the company Briefcam, which provides object matching services to CCTV, and operates with the Israeli police, military and border control. This technology is currently being used in Aberdeen.

History will mark those who stand to its right side and those who choose to be blind and stand with the injustice, oppression and genocide. Hope our university stands with what is right!
