International Effort to Clean-up Oceanic Garbage

International Effort to Clean-up Oceanic Garbage

The Issue

The amount of garbage floating in our oceans has increased dramatically over the recent years and is on the rise as a result of the worlds exorbitant use of plastics and other floatables. The use of plastic bags and water bottles worldwide has exacerbated the problem of floating garbage in our oceans to unsustainable levels. This then contributes to tons of garbage on shorelines worldwide, as well as, being trapped in the Pacific & Atlantic Gyres. This garbage often results in the choking and/or strangulation of sea life, such as fish, turtles, whales, and dolphins. There is also an increase of harmful chemicals in our food and throughout all biological systems. This is caused by most, and effects all, nations and people worldwide and therefore needs to be addressed by the United Nations.  We will petition the UNEP to form an international alliance to clean-up the seas. We believe this should be a international effort and should be funded proportionately by each countries Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or wealth.
