Allowing More Apartment Contract Termination Options for UNR Students in Student Housing
The Issue
The University of Nevada, Reno, has let go of many student workers and made their classes completely online. The apartments surrounding campus, that only allow students, are only giving one option to leave their lease and that is to get other students to sublease. Trapping other students into this mess, on top of that there is a 85% of rent fee that has to be paid to sublease the apartment out to someone (the 85% fee does not guarantee that someone will sublease so you will likely continue paying the monthly rent on top of the 85%). This has been the only option given.
A "free B" is not warranted, but a better alternative in getting out of the contract is. Whereas the last pandemic was the 1918 (H1N1) virus there is a need to look into newly embedded clauses for scenarios like the situation we are currently living in. Since there are only students living in these apartments, there is a need for the student apartments to acknowledge that classes will most likely not resume due to the dorms students are being forced to move out of.
Furthermore, many students are forced to move back home due to the economic uncertainty. Paying for rent somewhere we could do our classes at home is wasteful for many students. Furthermore, it is not possible for some families in the current economic standing with businesses shut down to be paying for a wasteful rent.
One idea that has been brought to attention is, paying a month and a half down should be viable option to terminate the contract. Among the many other ideas that have been brought to light and the many others that can be worked out.
