The Issue

I am urging you to take action and ban the interpretation of Yondr pouches in New York City Public Schools. While these pouches  introduced of declining rates of distractions from the school board,  they come in cost of student safety , accessibility ,and student trust.Phones are not just distractions they are tools for learning, communication, and emergencies .

In my personal experience during freshman year (2023-2024) in New York City Public School ,  when  the school board used the policy of Yondr pouches some teachers where biased in how they enforced the policy .Certain students  were permitted to bypass the regulations to unlock their pouches during school hours “classroom hours “, while other were restricted to. This inconsistency  created inequality and tension in the classroom ,making student individuals feel unheard .This policy was  not applied equally , and caused more frustration than focus . Hence my school didn’t use this policy in the following year due to this issue. There  is no justifiable  reason to continue enforcing the DOE to regulate the Yondr policy in the school year of 2025-2026 .Its time for a change  that respects students and promotes real responsibility.

Enforcing  the Yondr pouch policy in DOE public schools statewide  is not only ineffective, it’s costly misuse of public school funding .At approximately $35 per pouch ,the DOE is spending millions of dollars  on locking  up students phone  instead of addressing serious factors such as improving school safety ,updating outdated  facilities ,or enhancing  school meals .New York City public  high school population is nearly 320,000 students that’s millions of dollars of pouches not including that these public schools get an extra supply of pouches.  These  fundings on Yondr pouches are being unethically implemented when the DOE can solve  problems as school nutrition and expanding school programs. Many New York City Schools struggle with factors such as  underfunded security  measures , overcrowded classrooms, and unhealthy food menu options. That money can be spent  on programs that  actually benefit students  overall well being  and education, rather than silencing  them with a pouch . Investing in trust , safety, and nutrition, should come before investing in control.

Instead of locking away our devices, let’s focus on teaching responsible use and digital citizenship. We deserve the chance to learn how to manage our phones, not just have them taken away. The Yondr policy is outdated and punishes all students for the actions of a few. It’s time for a smarter, more respectful approach.

Why is this important?
Every New York City  Public School Student  deserves to be heard , respected,  and safe  not locked away behind a $35 Yondr pouch .Enforcing the  Yondr  policy  across NYC public schools  is not only a  financial burden on already underfunded  schools , it ignores  the real issues that students face everyday. That $35 per pouch  could go toward improving  school safety , upgrading outdated lunch menus , or providing  vital mental health support .Instead we are paying  to silence and restrict students .This policy sends the wrong message  that  control matters more than trust, that punishment matters more than progress. If you care about how our schools use their money, how students are treated, and what truly improves learning, then stand with us. Let’s end the pouch policy and start investing in what really matters.
