The Issue

Keeping the doors of Esterhazy High School permanently locked throughout the day (lunch included) causes significant inconvenience and poses potential dangers to students and staff alike. We urge EHS administration to consider unlocking the doors during school hours to ensure both security and accessibility.

Esterhazy High School houses a plethora of students and staff members who move in and out frequently for various activities. Locked doors can create bottlenecks, especially when swift entry or exit is necessary. This raises concerns not just about personal safety in times of actual emergencies, but everyday well-being, where quick access to classrooms, administrative offices, and other facilities is crucial.

You may say that this is only a senior issue and those who don’t skip, won’t complain. Yes, seniors are affected since many students in the senior end, have spares during which they leave the school. However, students throughout the school are also affected. Look at the gym classes, especially now, they are constantly coming in and out to go skiing or skating, not allowing them to enter through their nearest door may pose a threat of tardiness, which is what this policy aimed to prevent. Alongside this, teachers may also be affected, especially those who don’t have a first period class.

Moreover, in the event of an emergency the current locked-door policy could lead to unpleasant outcomes if evacuation is delayed or obstructed. Statistics from similar facilities indicate that streamlined access can significantly improve emergency response times and improve survival rates.

Therefore, we propose a comprehensive review and revision of the current door-lock policy. By unlocking the doors during specific times, such as between periods and lunch hours, we can protect students and staff without sacrificing their accessibility needs.

Join us in pushing for a safer, more accessible Esterhazy High School by signing this petition. Let's encourage the administration to prioritize the dual goals of safety and accessibility for the betterment of our school community.
