"Unlock Chromebook Potential! Sign for Sustainability!"

The Issue

Dear Google,

We, the undersigned users and supporters of Chrome OS devices, urge you to enhance the Chrome OS platform to extend the functionality and lifespan of Chrome OS devices while also contributing to the reduction of electronic waste.

As users who value the versatility and utility of Chrome OS devices, including Chromebooks and Chromeboxes, we are concerned about the limited lifespan of older models due to software compatibility issues and lack of updates. This not only impacts individual users but also educational institutions, businesses, and organizations that rely on Chrome OS devices for their daily tasks and operations.

Therefore, we call on Google to consider the following initiatives:

1. Implement a feature that allows users to install alternative operating systems on older Chrome OS devices, such as lightweight Linux distributions, to extend their lifespan and reduce the need for premature device replacement. This would benefit users who are keen to explore new functionalities and keep their devices relevant.

2. Develop an "End-of-Life (EOL) Chrome OS" specifically tailored for older devices, optimizing performance and support for aging hardware while retaining essential features. This would ensure that even devices past their prime can still provide a functional and efficient computing experience.

3. Continue the development and refinement of LACROS, the project aimed at bringing the Chrome browser to Chrome OS via Linux, to provide an updated browsing experience for older devices. Access to an updated browser is crucial for security and compatibility with modern web applications.

4. Implement a mechanism for users to manually update the Chrome browser on older Chrome OS devices, ensuring they can access the latest web technologies and security updates. This would mitigate security risks and ensure that users can continue to browse the web safely.

By taking these steps, Google can demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and innovation while empowering users to make the most of their Chrome OS devices for longer periods, ultimately reducing electronic waste and benefiting both users and the environment.

Who is impacted:
Users of older Chrome OS devices, including individuals, educational institutions, businesses, and organizations, are impacted by the limited lifespan of these devices.

What is at stake:
The functionality and usability of older Chrome OS devices are at stake, as well as the environmental impact of premature device replacement and electronic waste generation.

Why is now the time to act:
With an increasing focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility, now is the opportune time for Google to address the concerns of users regarding the lifespan of Chrome OS devices. Additionally, as technology evolves rapidly, ensuring that older devices remain functional and relevant is essential for providing an inclusive computing experience for all users.
