Earth's Last Straw: Say NO to plastic straws in NTU, Singapore!

0 have signed. Let’s get to 10,000!

The Tzu Chi Collegiate Youth Association vows to axe the rampant usage of plastic straws in the Nanyang Technological University. We've launched a prescriptive sustainable project 'Strawless Flawless' to cut down the use of plastic straws, by collaborating with vendors and educating the consumers.

Plastic straw, one of the most short-lived products, is befouling our vast blue oceans. In the future, more of it will be crowding the marine world if we continue using at the current rate.

Over 500,000,000 plastic straws are produced every day in America. End to end, straws used daily in the United States could circle the planet more than 2.5 times a day. Unfortunately, an enormous majority of these straws end up in our oceans, contributing to millions of tons of trash and over 1,000,000 seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals ingesting plastic.

Plastic straws are not easily recycled. So what happens then? Some straws are incinerated, which adds toxic chemicals into the atmosphere. Most straws go into landfills where they live forever since plastic isn’t biodegradable. When buried in the ground, straws leach harmful chemicals into the soil and groundwater. The rest end up floating into streams, rivers and eventually the ocean. There they find their way into gyers and are broken down into tiny bits and ingested by marine mammals and other sea life.

If you care about the sea turtles, the seagulls, the seals, the fishes, and yourself, we welcome you to pledge to make a positive impact to the world. The cumulative power of all will steer the vendors towards greener business practices. With the help of your pledge to support eco-friendly restaurants and food courts in NTU, you will soon see

  1. StrawLite dining places. Plastic straws are only provided upon request.
  2. Strawless Tuesday. Plastic straws are completely off the table on every Tuesday.
