Hunter Bullard started this petition to University of Wyoming and

The University of Wyoming employs several students in departments such as Transit, IT, Admissions, Campus Recreation, and more. Many of these students have already been financially impacted by the implementation of the UW Phase plan because they have not been asked to come back to campus until a certain date. Students were dependent on coming back to campus for their on-campus jobs during phase 2, which has been set back by the pause. In addition, students who were already employed in phase one were also dependent on their income from the school.

Students cannot afford a five-day gap in their income, and the unpredictability of pauses means that a second pause could be triggered soon after the end of a pause.

Our student fees go largely towards personnel at the University, including student employees. The University has the funds to pay students but is refusing to, citing current economic relief available and the new COVID-related campus jobs.

Current economic relief for UW students is not enough. The CARES Act Grant is being used by many students to pay back expenses or debts accrued during the pandemic and is not available for international students, DACA recipients, or out-of-state students who are taking all online classes. Furthermore, these funds take more time than traditional UW paychecks to deposit into student accounts.

To say that students can simply get another job with the new COVID-related University jobs is ridiculous: not only does the onboarding process take time, it typically takes several weeks to receive a paycheck from a new UW job. Not only this, the unpredictability of pauses means that students could be signed up for one of these new COVID jobs, and immediately after being hired, their old job could resume. This would leave gaps in departments around the University.

Student economic relief needs to be immediate, comparable to normal pay, and in the best interest for student employees.

In signing this petition, we ask the University of Wyoming:

1.      To pay hourly, non-benefitted students during all UW pauses brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic at their usual rate. We ask for this rate to be calculated by departmental supervisors for students to continue to receive comparable pay.

2.      To not require students to fill out forms for emergency sick leave for their pay as these forms could easily be denied.

3.      To set up additional economic resources for students and employees such as reinstating the “Pokes Make the Difference” fund or something similar for student employees.

4.      To make all these forms of economic relief available and accessible for all hourly, non-benefitted student employees regardless of status (in-state students, out of state students, DACA recipients, international students, etc.)

The University needs to understand the immediacy and gravity of this issue. Student employees make up so many departments of this University and without them, our campus would not be the same. We urge the University to pay these hourly, non-benefitted student employees during pauses to make our campus community as great as it can be.
