University of Toronto - Please Switch to Non-Animal Testing

The Issue

World Day for Animals in Laboratories is observed every year on April 24. The surrounding week has come to be known as "World Week for Animals in Laboratories.” The National Anti-Vivisection Society describes the day as an "international day of commemoration" for animals in laboratories.

Every year, over 100 million animals are used for experimentation, most of whom die or are killed in laboratories around the world. In these labs, animals are poisoned, set on fire, starved, mutilated, frozen, have their skulls drilled in, kept in steel isolation cages, induced to have heart attacks, forced to consume drugs, mentally abused, subjected to electrical shocks, and many other cruel and inhumane acts.

University of Toronto inflicts harm and pain on innocent mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and fishes. Experimenting on animals is not only unacceptable but also almost completely INEFFECTIVE! Ninety-five per cent of drugs tested on animals FAIL, a statistic you are surely aware of.

Countries around the world have already established facilities dedicated to non-animal alternatives and approved legislation to shift away from animal testing. It has been proven that exploiting animals is completely unnecessary and unreliable.

Animal-free methods EXIST and they include in-vitro testing, cell and tissue studies, organs-on-chips technology, computer modeling, state-of-the-art brain and body scanners, human-like simulators, and clinical studies using human volunteers.

In March 2021, it was announced that Israeli scientists have developed a cancer drug without testing it on animals by using a chip that simulates the human body.

University of Windsor is home to the Canadian Centre for Alternatives to Animal Methods (CCAAM) and the Canadian Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (CaCVAM). It is promoting the replacement of animals in Canadian biomedical research, education, and regulatory testing through 21st century science, innovation, and ethics and is proving that using animals is completely unnecessary.

As a globally top-ranked university, we call on you to follow in the footsteps of University of Windsor and to step out of the dark ages and into the 21st century. Put an immediate end to your barbaric practices and switch to animal-free research methods.
