Although living during the COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented times, there are not going to be many accommodations made to support the health and safety of our students on campus in laboratory settings as of right now for the Spring 2021 semester. It is already not beneficial to students that anyone outside of the 25 mile radius of campus has to still live in a residence hall for their first 2 school years during the COVID-19 pandemic, irregardless of whether or not all of their classes are online, unless they fill out a housing exemption form. This means that the process has been very difficult from students outside of the Toledo area to be exempt from University housing, even if they have no reason to be on campus. Now, the Department of Chemistry is adamant that students for the Spring 2021 semester will have to attend in-person laboratory sections unless they have all other online classes and are not living on the University campus. There is currently a large student population living on campus even though all of their classes are online, whether by choice or because they are outside of the exemption radius and their requests were denied.  The decision of all in-person laboratory sections denies students their voice in choosing if they feel comfortable attending these sections or not, and denies students with disabilities such as anxiety the right to safe accommodations during the COVID-19 pandemic. There needs to be an online laboratory section available to all students, regardless of whether they are living on campus or not as long as they have exceeding circumstances, such as diagnosed anxiety or if all of their are classes are online and they do not feel comfortable attending. The decision to require in-person laboratory sections takes away a voice from those student populations required to live on campus even though they have chosen all-online classes and populations with stated disabilities. There were online laboratory sections available this semester, so please hear our voices and offer the same online course alternatives during this Spring 2021 semester as we will still be partaking in modified learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
