Stop the closure of the Art Foundation Course at UCA Canterbury

The Issue

The University of the Creative Arts in Canterbury is planning to stop the Art Foundation and Extended Diploma courses from September 2023.

Both courses are currently oversubscribed with approximately 180 students in each year group.

These free courses for 16 - 19 year olds offer a vital opportunity for local youngsters to experience life at an Art University. They get to try out industry standard facilities in art specialisms and world class technical and creative teaching not available at schools or other local colleges. This allows our local children to find out where their strengths and passions lie at a crucial time in their lives without committing to the huge expense of a degree course at University. The Extended Diploma which is the two year course that students can undertake after their GCSE's offers a life line to creative young people who would not have sufficiently high grades at GCSE to secure a place on an A Level course.

The University of the Creative Arts is closing the Rochester campus in September 2023 and there are rumors that the Canterbury campus will be next if we do not save the Foundation and Extended Diploma Courses.
