Keep the Maverick Cafe Open and Give UTA Students water.
The Issue
As a student of The University of Texas at Arlington living on campus in West Hall, I find the shutting down of the Maverick Café and campus water fountains disgraceful. It goes against our basic human rights; food and water are basic necessities that we students must be able to access. With the closing of the Maverick Café, all West Hall and Timber Brook students would have to walk the half mile to the University Center to eat using their meal plan. The University advertises the Maverick Café to encourage students to live in these residence halls, which makes its closure even more of a disgrace. I believe that the University should keep the Maverick Café open in order to serve the West Hall and the Timber Brook Apartments students until at least Thanksgiving break. For the water fountains, the university should designate a location where students can pick up daily water bottles. Or instead of portable water, the university could provide water filters for the students. If The University of Texas at Arlington can spend over nine million dollars on making a front entrance for the school, it can certainly afford to keep Maverick Café open and make portable water accessible for students on campus.
