The University of Oregon has qualified professors and courses pertaining to diversity and inclusion, but not enough students who take advantage of those opportunities. Ultimately, the reason why students do not register for these courses comes down to lack of advertisement and availability within the university and a disconnect within the backgrounds and values between students. 

As a student double majoring in Cinema Studies and Business Administration, I have experienced a clear divide between the environments created in each department and I believe a key factor is the difference in course requirements. Cinema Studies classes have an emphasis in racial history, discrimination, gender inequality, etc. which has created a more open-minded and welcoming culture. As a person of color who is involved in student orgs, I often rely on safe spaces across campus (i.e. the MCC) because I often don't feel welcome at the university. 

With that being said, I would like the University of Oregon to require all students to take classes involving diversity and inclusion. It's not the responsibility of student organizations to teach the entire student body when something is insensitive and students should not feel uncomfortable and voiceless when something upsetting is brought to their attention. Student should not be scared to discuss these topics as well. Professors with a passion for teaching these courses should be more appreciated and be able to teach these classes more frequently. By requiring these courses, the university will only become a more inclusive space for young adults to learn and grow.
