Change the name of Deady Hall

Change the name of Deady Hall
The Issue
Deady Hall on the campus of University of Oregon is named after Mathew Paul Deady, a lawyer, politician and judge in Oregon during the 1850’s. When Oregon first became a state in 1859, Deady was the first US district court judge, and a founder of the University of Oregon’s School of Law. However, his positive achievements do not outweigh the negatives. Deady ran as a pro-slavery delegate to the Oregon Constitutional Convention in 1857, maintained that slaves were property under the law and argued that southerners whom moved to Oregon had a right to hold on to their human property—slaves. A direct quote from Deady himself, “Black people are just as much property as “horses, cattle and land.” Oregon is a diverse campus. Many Africa-American and black students call it home. There have been many other problems surrounding campus building names. In 2017 President of the University of Oregon, Michael Schill denied changing the name of Deady Hall. Being a graduate from the University of Oregon, students and staff are disturbed by having a building named after a man who lived his life to promote slavery. We ask that the name be changed to honor alumna who better represent our school. Our school is lush with history and alumns. It’s time our campus reflect a brighter tomorrow and not remember the sins of its past.
