In the wake of COVID-19 or more commonly known as the Coronavirus, classes have been moved to an online format at our local Iowa universities. Consequently, commencement at most of the institutions has been cancelled for the Class of 2020. As a student who pays a large amount of money for education and took pride in organizations as well as academics, it is not equitable to withhold these high achieving seniors from their accomplishments. Graduation as of March 18th, 2020 is 52 days away which is longer than most of the businesses and services are required to close doors. As a student of a proud university, I am calling for the Iowa Board of Regents and the University of Northern Iowa to reverse their decision on the termination of spring commencement. This time frame allows our institutions to prepare for the necessary precautions while allowing students to be recognized for their hard work. We cannot let COVID-19 take control of our lives for this period. Decisions need to be made in shorter time increments to allow for important events to possibly occur.  Please help me with this call to action.
