Keep the Breaks for UNC Charlotte Students

Keep the Breaks for UNC Charlotte Students
The Issue
Whereas, on May 8th, 2020, UNC Charlotte Students were made aware of a draft calendar for the Fall 2020 semester. The plan suggests starting school on September 7th, eliminating fall break, eliminating the Thanksgiving Eve break, and holding final exams December 17th-23rd, and;
Whereas, numerous studies have shown a direct correlation between academic success and adequate time to rest, and;
Whereas, the ability to spend time away from school with family members is essential to the mental well being of individual students, and;
Whereas, the current proposal makes the ability for out of state students to travel home to loved ones for holidays difficult, if not impossible, and;
Whereas, numerous students have expressed concerns regarding the financial implications of having to buy plane tickets so close to holiday dates as well as the impact this schedule will have on jobs held back home, and;
Whereas, no student leadership was involved with the development of the proposed schedule,
Therefore,
We, the Students of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, find this proposal to be in direct conflict with our best interests for success and our well being. We call upon the University to come up with a schedule that meets our academic needs while also respecting our mental well being, financial readiness, and ability to travel home to loved ones for the holidays. We call upon the University to identify key student leaders and seek their input on a academic calendar that most adequately addresses the needs of the Student Body. To do any less is a disservice to the students of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte that put their faith and trust in the University administration.
