Operation Salita ("Speak")

Operation Salita ("Speak")
The Issue
The Filipino community is one of the fastest growing communities in Las Vegas. Tagalog, the native language of the Philippines, is also the 2nd most spoken language (excluding English) in the state of Nevada, behind Spanish. But, why can't I learn Tagalog in the classroom? Why isn't taking a Tagalog language course an option for students?
In November 2021, despite our efforts, the World Languages and Cultures Department at UNLV rejected our proposal to install a Tagalog language course due to a lack of funding & resources, but we will not give up so easily!
Operation Salita is a public education initiative, led by UNLV's Filipinx
American Student Association to install Tagalog as a foreign language
course at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). This campaign also
aims to educate the community on the importance of language inclusivity
and access as well as cultural awareness and competency in public spaces.
It is a crucial step towards racial diversity and inclusivity to create this opportunity for not just students, but members of our community! We urge you to please sign and share this petition in favor of adding Tagalog as a foreign language course at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas!
