Remove "Master-Slave" phrasing from UMN engineering lab manuals

The Issue

In Electrical Engineering classes, we learn about flip-flop circuits, and a certain kind is called the "Master-Slave" flip flop. That phrasing echoes a violent and cruel era of American history when we used to enslave people. It is not uncommon for lab manuals to frequently mention the "Master-Slave" flip flop, and professors refer to it in lectures as well.

While this is the standard terminology used by the EE industry at large, that does not change the fact that it is a problem. UMN should be a leader by taking initiative to stop the harmful language of "Master-Slave."

I suggest that the ECE department should first agree upon a replacement term (eg M-S or Mother-Son), then begin replacing the outdated term in the ECE lab manuals.
