Allow for outdoor basketball rims to be returned to Superblock at UMN
The Issue
Allowing students to use the outdoor basketball facilities will enhance student health and wellness at the University of Minnesota. Students that typically cause problems for the Recreation and Wellness Center staff will be less inclined to break COVID-19 protocol at the Rec, and therefore will keep this indoor space safe. Outdoor activities like Spikeball, Volleyball, and Ultimate are commonly played around campus safely, basketball is no exception. Students understand that they are putting themselves at risk by playing on the courts (even though going to an outside restaurant and eating near people is just as dangerous), just as they understand the risks of infection as they live on campus. Mental health professionals often talk about the importance of exercise and how it can improve mental health in troubling times, such as the pandemic, this would not only give students a convenient option for exercise but would also remove rule-breaking to an extent at the RecWell.
On a similar note, many students are completely, partially, and soon to be vaccinated against COVID-19, and as herd immunity builds, the risk of infection falls.
