The Issue

We, students, faculty, staff, and members of the broader university community, have reviewed the recent communication issued by the University of Miami leadership regarding the removal of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion resources from the University’s website.

The University’s statement references an evolving regulatory environment and a shift in focus toward a "culture of belonging," but fails to provide specific details on why these changes were made, how they will impact the university community, or what the practical implications will be. While institutional policies may shift in response to financial and political pressures, the University’s message leaves important questions unanswered, particularly regarding the reorientation of DEI resources and the specific rationale behind this shift.

While we acknowledge and support the proactive protection of federal and state funding for research efforts, especially as organizations based in the natural sciences, we cannot ignore the hardships that underrepresented communities are experiencing right now and how removing these resources without transparency is harmful, no matter the intent.

As leaders of the University of Miami community, we call on the administration to:

  1. Publicly acknowledge the removal of DEI resources and provide transparency in the decision-making process that led to their removal.
  2. Physically reinstate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion resources on campus if they cannot be made publicly available online.
  3. Engage with students and faculty in an open forum and/or message to the student body to discuss how we can maintain and strengthen support for underrepresented groups in our community while maintaining state funding.

The strength of our institution lies in its people. We urge the university to stand firm in its values and ensure that all members of our community– present and future—feel supported in their pursuit of knowledge and discovery.
