University of Houston Agnes Arnold Reconstruction

The Issue

University of Houston is one of the largest universities in Texas yet has such little access to mental health care and help. Within the past two months two students at University of Houston have ended their lives in the Agnes Arnold building. This has caused many students to raise concern on the structure of the building and why this is the only classroom building on University of Houston campus that this has happened in. The reason for this is the easy access to the rooftop from the ground level of the building. Remodeling or destruction and rebuilding the Agnes Arnold is a priority in order to be proactive in the safety of the anyone who has access to the building. Along with the safety hazards of the building there also is the lack of access to mental health support on campus that is free to students that are currently attending University of Houston. Personally I was effected by the first incident; I tried to reach out to CAPS which is the University of Houston student counseling group. There was a two month wait to even get into an appointment as well as if you don’t have health insurance there is a charge involved. I am a student at University of Houston and I have been for a year now. I searched for help somewhere I thought was safe and felt discarded and uncared for by University of Houston CAPS. This is not acceptable for University of Houston; this counseling  should be a walk-in and free service to all students of University of Houston. This petition is to get Agnes Arnold the changes that are necessary and the mental health care that is so desperately needed among young adults navigating early life in college. Agnes Arnold should have a designated section in the new remodeled or rebuilt building specifically for CAPS and help for students with mental health issues. There should also be a memorial in honor of the three victims of mental health that ended their lives in such a short moment through the tragedy of the lack of safety and support from the University of Houston. Please sign this petition if you want change too.
