reinstate David Hume tower or rename Washington DC

reinstate David Hume tower or rename Washington DC
The Issue
The University of Edinburgh has removed the name of 18th century Edinburgh philosopher David Hume from a building on the grounds that he speculated on supposed racial differences in a way not considered acceptable today. Since the prime mover behind the blacklisting is a US citizen, a valid comparison may be drawn between David Hume, who condemned slavery as 'more cruel and oppressive than any other civil subjugation whatsoever' and US President George Washington who, with his wife, owned 317 enslaved people on his Mount Vernon estate at the time of his death. David Hume neither owned slaves, nor profited from slavery, at any point in his life. It is proposed that Washington's name be disassociated with the Federal Capital of the USA, which should be renamed in honour of its forgotten visionary founder, George Walker, who first suggested its site on January 23rd 1789. That capital city should be redesignated 'Walkertown DC' at the earliest opportunity. The petitioners may however be minded to abandon this objective if Edinburgh University Senate and Council agree to re-instate the name of David Hume on the building now known as 40 George Square, Edinburgh.
