Students Against Friday Classes

The Issue

Administrators of the University of Denver are proposing to implement regular Friday classes as a tool to combat alcohol related incidents that occur on Thursday evenings. This proposed change to our schedules will not only have no affect on the number of alcohol related incidents, but it will also drastically change the culture surrounding our institution. Students rely on Fridays as a source of free time for a number of things such as; leisure, work, skiing, exercise, volunteering, chores, and enjoying the many activities our beautiful state has to offer. Forcing students into the classroom on Fridays will not only result in no change to the pattern of alcohol consumption on Thursdays, but will result in the increased consumption of alcohol on Fridays and a decrease in the overall wellbeing of students. This will lead to an unhealthy learning environment, resulting in students being less successful both in and out of the classroom. Please sign this petition as a way of voicing your concern and outrage at this proposed method of combating alcohol related incidents that will lead to more harm than good for you, and our beloved school.

Hello my fellow Pioneers! I am amazed at how much support this has gained in such a short period of time! I think this clearly shows that us as students, value the free time provided by no classes on Friday's. I received an email from the Provost and I think it is necessary to respond to some of his claims. He believes I am misleading you all with the term "mandatory". He claims that Friday's are being considered to become just a "regular class day", not mandated classes. My question is, what's the difference? Given the value placed on each class at this school, I believe every class is mandatory. Attendance might still be optional, depending on the individual professor and subject matter, but you are still paying money for that class day whether you attend or not. We live in a consumer driven economy. Privatized Education is simply another marketplace where consumers exchange money for education. We as consumers have the power to choose whether or not to consume, and I urge that we exercise this power. I am not asking you all to drop out of college or transfer! I am simply asking that we fight to protect Friday's from becoming a regular class day. Many of the world's most renowned academic institutions do not hold regular classes on Friday's, and I believe the University of Denver should continue this trend. I thank you all for the support you have given to this petition, and ask that you continue to voice your concerns over the implementation of regular classes on Friday's, for both yourself and future generations of Pioneers. Thank you, Kevin Bartlett.
