Investigate allegations of harsh working conditions, intimidation, retaliation, denial of sick leave, and more on behalf of DU employed custodial staff
The Issue
Do you care if the toilet you sit on is clean? If the rooms in the residence halls are professionally cleaned in between the students that use them? If your trash is taken out? If the children in the day-cares served by campus are being exposed to filth and germs? If the walkways to buildings are plowed in the winter? Well then you need to read this, not only if you are a member of the University of Denver community, but if you care about human dignity and equality in the workplace.
Students, Staff, Faculty and allies at the University of Denver have recently been informed that custodial staff employed by the University of Denver and managed by the Aramark Corporation are being subject to harsh working conditions that include bullying, intimidation, and retaliation which is in violation of the human resources policy 3.10.010[1] on discrimination/equal opportunity. This information has come from custodial staff members themselves. The undersigned see this treatment as being non-reflective of the Universities’ human resource values of respect, ethical behavior, quality, commitment to community, and inclusive excellence.
We, the undersigned, are concerned students, staff, faculty, and community members who urge the University of Denver to enact a full, comprehensive and independent investigation of their partner, Aramark. Specifically we ask that allegations of harsh working conditions that include under staffing, intimidation from supervisors, retaliation against employees that filed complaints and were later terminated, recently the denial of sick leave and paid time off, and other issues be investigated. The members of the DU community also ask that the University re-consider their relationship and contract with Aramark while the 3rd party contractor is under investigation. We demand that the University announce that they are investigating these claims and release a report of findings once this investigation is complete. If there is no response to this petition, we the undersigned are willing and prepared to take necessary action to denounce the University for allowing such practices to continue.
