Eliminate Styrofoam from UCO Dining

Eliminate Styrofoam from UCO Dining
The Issue
The University of Central Oklahoma currently uses styrofoam containers and cups in many of its on-campus dining facilities. This has a significant negative impact on the environment, as styrofoam is non-biodegradable and is considered one of the most environmentally unfriendly types of waste. Polystyrenes emit harmful air pollutants when exposed to sunlight, and by volume, make up 25-30% of all global landfill waste. Styrofoam containers are also considered a health hazard, as they often release toxic chemicals into food.
As climate change and global waste increase, it is more important than ever that our university does its part to decrease waste emissions. One simple way to accomplish this is by eliminating styrofoam from all on-campus dining facilities, and replacing it with biodegradable paper-based products. UCO prides itself as an investment for success, preparing future leaders. One way that Central can provide for the health and future success of its students is by deliberately working toward a cleaner, more habitable planet.
I am one of many UCO students who wants my school to make environmentally conscious decisions and support its students in our efforts to care for our planet. We urge you to take this step to make The University of Central Oklahoma a greener campus.
