Today, 3/31/21, the University of Central Oklahoma announced that they would not offer Extended or Virtual options for the Fall 21 semester.  Many students feel that the pandemic is ongoing, as shown by Oklahoma’s (and the USA’s) increasing infection numbers.  Some students may be Immune Compromised and not able to take the risk of meeting face to face.  Other non-traditional students live outside of the Oklahoma City Metro or have children and do not have the time to spare to commute during Student Teaching in the Fall semester.

Whatever the reason, the school has spent thousands of dollars on equipment to bring UCO into the future with blended options that allow students from all walks of life to obtain a degree other than “Liberal Studies.”

This is why current upperclassmen from UCO have started this petition.  We strongly request that the college honor its dedication to helping nurture future teachers and leaders in Oklahoma by continuing Extended classrooms for the fall while Teacher Candidates are required to be training in the classroom from 7:30a - 3:30p.  If extended classes are not an option, then we need online courses that cover the same required classes.  More online sections of each class are likely needed for summer or fall.

Students who cannot get to the 4:30p-7:15p in person classes after their student teaching may be forced to change their major and become alternatively certified to teach— adding to the teacher crisis in Oklahoma.  UCO is cutting off these students at their knees; strapping them with student debt but taking the last classes they need away from them, thus leaving these students with debt and no way to obtain their degree to pay it off.

Help us fix the problem and show UCO that extended classrooms are still needed and important to many of UCO’s students!
