UCLA Cares Act

UCLA Cares Act
The Issue
On March 10, 2020, UCLA was declared to have online instruction until April 10, 2020. This was later extended to the entire spring quarter of 2020 on March 13, 2020. Students have not been refunded any on campus fees for this, but we were also "encouraged to return home if possible" by our Chancellor, Gene Block. Due to the majority of the students leaving the dormitories, we recieved refunds that would've initially paid for housing. Now because of this, we are ineligible to recieve Bruin Tech Grants to help pay for technology during this time as well as additional Care Grants for other COVID-19 related expenses. Many of us college students were denied stimulus checks given to the citizens of the United States of American as well. This Care Grant is our form to pay for money we lost. UCLA should not have the right to withhold this money the government has given for us because of their blindness to the struggles their students face. Other UC's such as UCR and UCSB directly gave their students way more than money we have been told of $200. They were also directly given this money, regardless if they have moved out of housing or not. Many of us have spent our housing refund on other forms of housing after being encouraged to move out of the dorms. Many of us lost our on campus jobs paying for food and bills. Personally, I used my housing refund money to move back home and help my family pay rent since their hours were cut. All of this money has now been used as I continue to attempt to do well in remote classes via an older cellphone. We demand to be considered for additional funding regardless of our housing situation. Thank you for reading and considering to sign this.
