The Issue

Mr.McKayle is not being dismissed from UCI, but is being stripped of his duties in relationship to the dance department, rendering him unfortunately without purpose.

Donald Mckayle retired out of the state of necessity and was recalled to continue teaching and choreographing multiple times for UCI. However, he was not informed of the rules limiting the number of recalls. For his final recall he will premiere two works, after which he will be terminated in June of 2016.

As students who admire, respect and honor Mr. McKayle, and find extreme value in his contribution to UCI and our personal experience as growing artists. Donald McKalye is a legend that continues to create new work, mentor and write recommendations. The youth and vitality coming from the students is sure to be a part of his life line. Many of Mr. McKayle’s contemporaries have passed away, what a true honor it is what we still have him and that he is still creating and making an impact in his community.

Our main purpose is to help ensure that Donald McKayle is allowed to keep his current position as Professor Emeritus. If he cannot we petition for a role to be created for him under the title of Advisor Emeritus. Under this title Mr.McKayle can continue working part-time with the Etude Ensemble, guest teach in undergraduate and graduate choreography classes, advise students for independent study, and present work for campus wide discussions and events.

This campaign is in no way aiming to damage the dance department, as it is the place that we chose to receive our education. Our focus is to grant Mr.McKayle's wishes, which are to continue spreading his knowledge and love for dance to his students. Let's honor his wants and allow him to stay at UCI.

If Donald McKayle has impacted your career in anyway, we invite you to sign this petition in support of his reinstatement.
