Daijah Conerly started this petition to University of California-Davis and

A short while ago, UC Davis Housing sent out an email with their plans for this fall, as many of my peers and I were concerned, we sent emails to administration. Not only have the emails in response grazed over the importance of ensuring students' safety in regards to easing our minds by answering our questions, but they have also shown that no suggestions will be heard from the incoming class. COVID-19 has affected many students financially and paying for things such as orientation, housing, and meal plans, which have steadily increased by large margins leaves students with feeling uneasy about settling into the new campus environment. Testing students should be required, not the least of their concern.

I sent an email to the chancellors at UC Davis which read, "Firstly, as you all are aware, moving 30,000 students on to one campus and expecting them to all follow social distancing guidelines is a bit unrealistic, as well is expecting for none of them to have coronavirus. A recent study from Stanford medicine indicated that "17.9% of infections are mild or asymptomatic". That being said, many students who will be moving on to campus will not even know that they have the virus. Now, I along with many of my first-year friends would rather move on to campus to get somewhat of a normal college experience without having to compromise our health.

I am now calling for a plan of action. UC Berkeley has a good plan where they are prioritizing 6,500 students. These students will be comprised of students living in LLC's, students with $0 EFC, student-athletes, and students with disabilities. Not only will these students be following the same guidelines you all have set, but many will have to get tested prior to moving on campus (shortly before). Cal State East Bay although it has half of the student population of Davis states, "we are temporarily assigning one person per bedroom until the county healthy board advises us that double occupancy rooms are safe once again. You will only be allowed one guest to assist with move-in."

I am suggesting that Davis adjust their plan to one that works more with the students and puts us all in a safer environment. The above notes are suggestions of ways in which many safety precautions are being taken, [I know all of these suggestions are] not entirely possible given that these are different campuses, but I believe that prioritizing certain students and requiring testing will alleviate so many nerves from the student and parent population of people. If you were to provide a section on the official UC Davis website of local free clinics that people could look up based on zip code for them to be tested, then add the record to our immunization records to ensure that we are all tested before moving on to campus, then encouraging self-quarantining until moving on to campus so students will not be exposed, would be much safer. Especially considering that around 4,000 students last year were out of state, 9,000 were international and will need to take planes to get to campus where they are more susceptible to contracting the virus. Once the students who have to come in by plane are there (preferably before the other students) my hope is that they can all go to the UC Davis clinic to be tested, if tested positive more precautionary measures will of course need to be taken such as deep cleanings etc.. Although wearing masks does reduce the risk that we will catch the virus, I am frightened and feel like there should be more precautions taken and I know there can be. I and many of my peers would love to stay on Davis' campus this fall, but the right way"

My email was shortly followed with a "congratulations" for reading through the chancellor's email, and being told that they are working to provide testing this fall. This is not enough, this is the bare minimum. Signing this petition will show support and unity among the student population at Davis who believe that testing should be done before we go on to campus so that we are not transporting the virus along to each other, our families, teachers, and roommates.
