The original film was seen by test audiences who thought the film was confusing and Universal Studios decided to re-shoot all of the Jackie Gleason "Bandit" scenes with Jerry Reed AKA the "Snowman" from the first two films. The re-edited film was re-titled as Smokey and the Bandit part 3 and released on August 12, 1983. The film was a flop losing 2 million dollars against its 9 million dollar budget. The original Smokey IS the Bandit was never released neither on TV or home media. Only the test audience were the people to see what was to be and now 36 years later, it is now time to see the film that Smokey and the Bandit fans have longed to see.
