Universal Basic Income is urgently NEEDED in Newfoundland and Labrador!

Universal Basic Income is urgently NEEDED in Newfoundland and Labrador!
The Issue
To the Liberal Government of Newfoundland and Labrador:
When the COVID-19 pandemic was declared in March 2020, many people lost their jobs here in Newfoundland and Labrador. In an already poverty-stricken province for many of the population, being laid off of jobs left people scrambling for income. The government came up with the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, CERB, to help people who lost their jobs or had hours reduced due to the pandemic.
Many people benefitted from CERB, even those who didn't qualify for it, but applied anyway. People were able to buy groceries to fill their cupboards and fridges, when in pre-pandemic times they were unable to afford enough to last until the next paycheck. People were actually able to catch up on some bills, with a steady income of 2000 dollars a month. This is proof that minimum wage that is being paid to workers, just doesn't cut it. CERB benefitted those struck the hardest by poverty, and even those who weren't! There was a glimmer of hope.
The bottom line is, this is proof that Newfoundland and Labrador can benefit from a Universal Basic Income. Our province at least needs a pilot project to prove its effectiveness. There have been many studies done on a UBI, and it works.
There is a window of opportunity to make solid, effective changes to our socioeconomic environment here in our province. A Universal Basic Income for everyone, regardless of income, would improve the overall social and economic wellbeing of everyone in some way. It will also contribute more money into our local businesses, and keep our money, here. When people are more financially secure, they feel more confident about affording local products that cost a little more.
Sincerely,
We the undersigned citizens of Newfoundland and Labrador.
