Unity for Children: Proactive Policies, Programs, and Systems for Children

The Issue

How many more data-driven studies and real-life incidents must occur before we, as a society, prioritize implementing policies and programs that proactively safeguard our children?

I firmly believe that safeguarding children requires an ongoing, proactive commitment rather than reactive response to crises.

Katrina, the visionary of the Project Unity for Children, pondered the extent to which a child's voice will be heard through her efforts to provide safeguard from impact of adverse childhood experience in a family. Her first-hand experience and reflection on the systems and processes in place have led to a poignant realization: the individuals, policies, and programs meant to prioritize children's rights and well-being often fall short. This struggle isn't unique to her; it resonates with the challenges faced by many, including those providing legal, social, and health services to children.

When we ignore situations in a child’s life involving substance abuse or other traumatic events, we're not neglecting just one child; we're allowing a ripple effect to permeate generations within our society. These experiences leave enduring scars, impacting mental health, future relationships, and socioeconomic status. Neglecting this duty comes with steep, often irreversible consequences for all involved.

Instead of relying on reactive responses to crises, the Project Unity for Children is committed to proactive, collaborative actions across society that could help foster a concept I personally created called Unified Systems That Heal™. I aim to help make this a collective commitment across society through my C.H.I.L.D. Framework™ with an aim to safeguard children through continued empowerment and well-informed enhancements of training, policies, programs, and advocacy. By making this a collective commitment across society, we can put an end to the intergenerational cycle of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) and foster a brighter future for children and families.

It's imperative for each of us, whether as individuals, organizations, influential figures, parents, caregivers, or general members of the community, to take decisive action for these children. Let's unite in prioritizing children's well-being, confronting the reality of ACEs with sustained, purposeful action. Together, we can forge a future where every child feels secure, esteemed, and empowered to realize their fullest potential. After all, it takes a village to raise a child.

I launched the #ILStand4Children™ campaign and invite you to join me in creating a movement where communities, organizations, and leaders unite to protect and empower children. Let's unite!
