Stop felons from being labeled for life!

The Issue

"If you do the crime, you do the time." For those who receive a felony conviction, that time can last long after the sentence has been fulfilled and the person released. Some with a felony on their record, especially and disproportionately those who are poor and/or people of color, are negatively impacted in many areas of their lives for the rest of their lives.

This is discriminatory. This is prejudicial. This is unjust. This is unfair. This needs to stop. Now.

This petition demands that a full and complete overhauling of the sentencing guidelines be performed at the federal level, to be followed by all 50 states that immediately:

1.  REQUIRES ANY AND ALL EMPLOYMENT APPLICATIONS TO REMOVE THE QUESTION OF WHETHER OR NOT AN APPLICANT HAS BEEN CONVICTED OF A FELONY, AND

2.   UPON COMPLETION OF THE PRISON SENTENCE AS DETERMINED BY THE COURT (EXCLUDING PAROLE/PROBATION) THAT CITIZEN'S VOTING RIGHTS ARE IMMEDIATELY RESTORED.

Statistics show that one out of every four Black men in America are monitored by the judicial system - through parole, probation or prison. A disproportionate amount of juvenile offenders who are of color are tried as adults. It is a system designed to perpetuate poverty, recidivism, and a permanent underclass. To see change, we must be change. Thank you.
