Medical Conservatorship so I may advocate for my Medically Incapacitated Husband

The Issue

I have been married to my husband for 14 years. He is a war veteran who served in the army for 20 years. His last deployment was in Afghanistan. He was diagnosed with PTSD and anger issues. My children and I have been living with him while he manages the trauma that the war caused him.

When President Biden's administration pulled our U.S troops from Afghanistan, my husbands' mental state declined. He informed the HR of the company that he worked with he felt like he hit a wall. He took leave from work.  He became disconnected from reality, started drinking heavily, and would not take his medication. He left our home on Nov. 2 and experienced a complete mental break.  He became threatening to me and told the children wild fabrications that he believed to be true. I had to file a restraining order because I fear for my children's safety. I called the police, the VA Long Beach Hospital, the crisis assessment team. I was told there WAS nothing that they can do. My husband was now living on the streets for the first time ever and I now feared for his safety. Out of desperation, I posted on Facebook for help locating my husband. Someone saw my post and brought my husband to the VA hospital. He is still there currently but refusing treatment.

I talked to a conservatorship lawyer. She told me that the best thing that she can do for me is to grant conservatorship over my husbands' assets. She can only attempt for the judge to grant me medical conservatorship for the care and well-being of my husband BECAUSE of the permanent restraining order (Domestic Violence) that was granted to me by the family court. I specifically asked for the judge to grant me an exception to speak with my husband about his medical health and our financial standing. I also asked for an exception for my children to still talk to their father through any electronic means as I believe it will be very vital for my husbands' healing. The Judge graciously granted me the exceptions at my discretion. Yes, I do need conservatorship over our assets so that I can pay the bills and keep a roof over our children's heads.  My plea is to also be granted medical conservatorship to ensure that he receives the best care that he needs (e.g. Therapy, medication).  He needs to be in a place where he can continue treatment and that someone of sound mind is aware of what is happening with him.

My children need their father back and not this illness that took over their fathers' mental state. I want my husband back.  I need to keep our family safe and intact.  It will take a long time for my husband to heal. I made a vow, through thick and thin, through richer or poorer, through sickness and in health. PLEASE, HELP ME sign this petition for me to get granted medical conservatorship so I can continue to protect, advocate and help my husband.

Our system needs to CHANGE!  I need to be able to advocate for my husband medically.  I filed for a restraining order because he was not in touch with reality and I needed to protect our children.  Now I need to also be able to protect him too.  Conservatorship should not only consist of financial matters! The court needs to understand that a family suffers when they cannot help and advocate for their loved ones who are mentally incapacitated, especially our war veterans who served this country!!!!

President Joe Biden needs to know that Afghanistan's pull-out did not just affect the soldiers that were there at the time but also the veterans and their families.

Maybe, just maybe through this, I can get help!!!! PLEASE! Thank you!!!!!
