Over the past few days, the crisis in Afghanistan has been intensifying. The Taliban have taken over most of Afghanistan, and the country is engulfed in chaos. Amidst this chaos, former President Ashraf Ghani, and his top officials, Fazli, and Mohib secretly fled the country, leaving Afghanistan at the mercy of the Taliban. After leaving the government, and the country in shambles, he secretly fled with briefcases and cars filled with stolen cash on a private helicopter. Ashraf Ghani in essence handed the government over to the Taliban on a silver platter. Despite soldiers claiming they wanted to fight, and resist the Taliban, they state that they received direct orders from Ashraf Ghani to stand down, or risk being punished. Leaders opposing the Taliban were ambushed, and arrested.
His presidency was unremarkable, marked by corruption, theft, and violence. From the very start of his election campaign, his image and reputation was marred by violence. The corruption in his time as president was overwhelming. In 2019 SOS International (SOSi), a Virginia company with links to the U.S. military, won exclusive access to mines across Afghanistan. President Ashraf Ghani’s brother is a major shareholder of a SOSi subsidiary.Although shut down after an inquiry, these Kunar projects have since been quietly restarted as a private venture, and are benefitting those closest to the president.(Margaux Benn and Zack Kopplin, April 2021) He also appointed his in laws in top government positions. He appointed his brother-in-law as the minister of finance, and his sister-in-law as the minister of education, despite them not being approved by parliament. His presidency involved actions which directly benefited those closest to him. He used government funds meant for the country to further his own lifestyle. Many of those in government positions, such as soldiers and ministers remain unpaid for their work, yet Ashraf Ghani used the fund inappropriately.
This petition asks the international community, Interpol, United Nations, and United Nations Human Rights Council, to hold Ashraf Ghani, as well as those officials who fled the country with him be held accountable for his actions. They must be brought to justice to stand trial for his crimes against the people of Afghanistan. The money that he fled the country with was government funds, which rightly belong to the people of Afghanistan, and therefore his actions constitute theft of millions of dollars. Ashraf Ghani needs to answer for the lives lost during his violent presidency, and for the millions of dollars meant for improving the lives of those vulnerable people in Afghanistan which were mismanaged and inappropriately used. Afghan people across the world and in Afghanistan demand justice. To let Ashraf Ghani roam freely after such violations of human rights is a gross injustice. We Demand, and we deserve justice.
