To have the USPS move our mailboxes to a safe location on our street.

The Issue

In the beautiful and small town of Sky Valley, there are over 30 mailbox points lining Dillion road between thousand palms canyon & Dowell Road. Of those mailbox points, the majority are single mailboxes located outside of a home that sits right on Dillion road. Less than 10 points have multiple mailboxes and less than 5 of those are without a direct sightline from one home to the mailboxes.

Unfortunately for our street, Larsen Lane, our mailboxes are just over 1/3 of a mile in one direction from the mailbox point. This has left our mailboxes open to regular vandalism, mail theft, and most recently the complete removal of most mailboxes (each costing over 100.00) from the post.

This not only causes issues when we are awaiting important mail but creates openings for fraud, identity theft, etc to occur. Not everyone has the means to constantly replace or repair their mailbox, nor rent a PO box.

What we are proposing, after much discussion with the United States Postal Service office in Desert Hot Springs, CA that serves our area, is that we receive approval for a bank of community mailboxes to be installed somewhere between the 1st home on Larsen lane and the last home on Larsen lane. This allows the mailboxes to be kept safe and secure.

Currently, there are streets in Desert Edge, Sky Valley, and Desert Hot Springs, all serviced by the same post office that has either owner supplied banks further down the road, as we are requesting, as well as community mailboxes. So this is not something new. We are just requesting that our mail safe delivery be considered.

We also have concerns with the safety of our delivery driver as Dillion is a 1 lane highway with marked speed limits of 55 MPH and drivers commuting through routinely driving speeds in excess of 65 MPH. We are worried that having to stop and deliver the amount of mail our street will be receiving in the future as several new lots are developed right off Dillion road leaves the postal-delivery person at risk of being injured by a rear-end collision or someone trying to pass through the wash that the street is located in.

The streets access is being moved to the top of a hill and we propose that 300 feet in from that new intersection that will be created by cal trans, also be considered as a secondary location for the mailboxes. The hope is that it is off Dillion road and less susceptible to the constant vandalism and theft that is currently occurring.
