For the past year or so, the United States Government and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have been making radical decisions that target car enthusiasts across the globe by formulating an agenda to put an end to gasoline/diesel-powered car sales by 2035. For a car enthusiast, gas/diesel powered vehicles are a key to happiness. The sound of an internal combustion engine is something we cannot get enough of. Governments and environmental protection agencies across the globe fail to realize the implications that EV’s (Electric Vehicles) have on the environment themselves. Gas/Diesel powered vehicles produce 4.6 metric tons of CO2 per year according to the EPA. When compared to other CO2 emissions, this value seems minimal. While performance and quality EV’s is continuously improving, manufacturers still have no means of what to do when the batteries go bad. Where do those batteries go once they’re depleted? How are they made? EV’s batteries are typically made of Lithium-Ion batteries. Lithium mines produce more CO2 emissions per year than the estimated amount of compliant gasoline/diesel-powered vehicles on the road today. Several reports also suggest Li-Ion batteries to be dumped in the ocean once depleted, which has implications on sea life. To charge the vehicles, we must look at where our electricity comes from, which is mainly gasoline and coal. Coal is heavily responsible for more CO2 emissions than cars themselves per year. All I have to ask is, what is truly the enemy of CO2 emissions?
