History of Oil Spills and Explosions that stick out in my mind and maybe you have never heard about them, let me share a few....
1. In September of 2010, a deadly gas pipeline explosion occurred in San Bruno, CA. from PG&E whom was “found guilty of obstructing the investigation”.
2. A 1,000,000 gallon of pipeline spill occurred in Michigan on July of 2010 at the Talmadge Creek and Kalamazoo River, by Enbridge Energy Inc. My hometown and still today the “largest inland DILBIT disaster oil spill” has not been completely cleaned up and most likely will never be in my lifetime.
3. Up to 30,000 gallons of crude oil spill from the pipeline in Ventura, CA. It began at a steep canyon slope and swiftly moved downstream towards the Ventura Pier in June of 2016. There was a great concern for wildlife in a location called a "freeway for animals" and the land/ ocean. The owners of Crimson Gas and Oil has a “terrible history of spills”. In fact, 11 oil spills since 2006 throughout the USA. (*one a year, they need to find another business to run)
4. The Refugio State Beach oil spill on May of 2015 deposited 143,000 gallons of oil on the beach and in the ocean killing many sea life animals, the cause was blamed on ruptured pipelines. (*2 years later the County Supervisors are still second guessing the emergency response to 143,000 gallons of oil on Refugio State Beach,) (unreal) There was 46 Criminal Charges and an indicted against Plains Pipeline LP, the previous owner of Price Canyon Oil Field in SLO County, including 4 felony charges of knowingly discharging a pollutant into state water. Tar balls were found as far away as Manhattan Beach, near Los Angeles, CA.
5. Guadalupe - Nipomo Dunes is still recovering from the “largest oil spill in state history at 8.5 million gallons of oil spilled from Union Oil in 1994”. Millions of gallons of oil called "DILUENT" that is similar to kerosene settled into the sand dunes and leaked into the ocean and ground water. Union Oil admits the spill was due to rusty pipes and mismanagement at its oil field.
6. More than 400, 218 gallons of crude oil, diesel fuel and gasoline contaminated the soil and groundwater in Avila Beach for many years (*possibly the leak started in the 1950's) in 1977 when the plume was discovered from an explosion on front street in a building's basement. This long buried oil spill from Unocal was the biggest environmental settlement in California history. It took 9 years of legal battles to tear down a toxic town and rebuild it up again. At the cost of $200 million dollars to ameliorate the pollution.
Unocal took out the reservoir after decades of pipeline leakage that consisted of 400,218 or more of gasoline, diesel fuel, crude oil, MTBE and other petrochemicals under the town, which was essentially a underground lake of oil. (*The Environmental Defense Fund sued the oil company under proposition 65 initiative clause, the forbidding of toxic into drinking water and won and it was first of its kind lawsuit)
7. In April of 1926, an electric storm hit many oil tanks without a lighting rod on it and it caused a massive fire that was seen 75 feet in the air. It turned out to be“the biggest lighting disaster at Union Oil Tank Farm Land in San Luis Obispo, CA.” In 1998 to 2001, a lawsuit was filed and was discovered that Tank Farm Land and adjacent properties were still contaminated from the oil spill and fire in 1926.
The Regional Water Quality Center Board (RWQCB) concluded there is still contamination on the property of Tank Farm Land, yet is allowing Chevron's whom bought it over to monitor the land and allow natural attenuation to biodegrade over time as an alternative to excavation. (unreal) In the meantime, Chevron's will continue to monitor the contamination land/water and report to the RWQCB.
The County has approved development on Tank Farm Land property, despite the fact that citizens have told the newspapers in San Luis Obispo, "Telegram Tribune" that on a hot day, they can see oil bubbling up on the Tank Farm Land in San Luis Obispo, CA.
Personally, I strongly believe that the Tank Farm Land on both sides of the street should not be allowed to build anything on it
ever * ever* ever *
I seen this happen in San Jose, new homes, new condos and even a fire station and within a short time-frame of 1-2 years, people started getting very sick/cancer from the water and land.
Read the specifics about this land/water contamination online at a legal website called FINDLAW
Case law: Court of Appeals, Second District, Division 6, California
HOLDGRAFER v. UNOCAL CORP, March 2, 2008
8. Currently in 2017, the Cats Canyon Oil Field outside of Santa Maria near Orcutt, CA. owned by Pacific Coast Energy Company is the largest oil field in Santa Barbara County is asking for 700 more steaming wells.
9. In October of 2015, The Porter Ranch gas leak was the worst in US history at Aliso Canyon by SoCalGas. The leak took 112 days to plug it up totaled 971,100 of methane pollution throughout LA County.
10. Lompoc Oil and Gas Plant is the most dangerous plant in Santa Barbara County it runs from platform Irene to Lompoc Oil and Gas Plant near Vandenberg Village it carries poisonous 'RAW' gas with enough hydrogen sulfate to kill people in the event of a leak.
11. Phillips 66 in Nipomo, CA has ancient pipelines that are 80 to 100 years old. There has been 5 known spills to occur at that location that have leak down towards the Creek, Dana Adope, and the Park. This spill occurred in the 1990s and etc and it is still visible on the creek beds. These environmental crimes have been on the radar for the Sierra Club, the San Luis Obispo County Water Board and 'Nipomo Creek Dogs' Environmental Group.
Incidental one spill was disclosed to Nipomo Creek Dogs Environmental Group, by an employee of the Phillips 66 Refinery, yet it was never told to the public and it was just by chance encounter that this was discovered by the Nipomo Creek Dog Environmental Group and told to the media.
The Water Board of San Luis Obispo County discovered the spill in 2003 and the Nipomo Community Service District was not told about it until 2006. Do you want to start on the dark side or the light sign of this lack of disclosure to the public. I think you get my point of view. In addition, Phillips 66 Refinery was asked for copies of repair records, inspection reports, and any history of neglect and they have not come forward with any of these copies to any environment groups or the like.
12. The Oil/Gas Refineries and landfill in or near the tribal land of Casmalia, Cat Canyon and Sisquoc are near Vandenberg Air Force Base is the home of the worst air and water quality in the central coast. These 3 *Superfund sites are called the 'Worst of the Worst' with numerous chemicals that equate to the alphabet soup of toxic waste. These pipelines are 100 years old or more are transferred to Phillips 66 in Nipomo. Prediction, a ticking time bomb waiting to happen.
13. To find the gas pipelines near your homes or businesses, please look up online for "Federal National Pipeline Mapping System' website.
14. And once again back at our very own Price Canyon Oil Field lawsuit and the underground pipeline project in Nipomo, which are both connected together, is pending in the courts. If this case is approved by the courts, we plan to appeal. At that point a larger scale petition drive will take place.
*Ban Fracking and Save Our Water * Land * Lives*
In all in all, this means the oil fields owners are stirring the ground for oil in all directions around California and sooner or later, there will be another situation of oil spill and gas explosion to a great magnitude, that will take lives and property and we will never see a complete recovery in our life times.
The only way to protect people's lives, wildlife and keep our water safe is to shut down the fossil fuels and invest in wind and solar power.
Let's tell the Governor and our elected officials, loud and clear that we do not want this bad dream to happen to us any longer. Fight back and say "Hell No" not here in San Luis Obispo County and Santa Barbara County.
