Factory farms are large-scale operations that keep animals in harsh living conditions to produce food that we consume on a daily basis. Not only are animals such as cows, pigs, and chickens enclosed in confined spaces, but they are also subjected to diseases, abuse, and they are given hormones to increase their sizes. Federal and state regulators should ban factory farming by not allowing new factory farm operations to be built or the existing ones to be expanded. The USDA oversees food production laws through sub-agency programs but, there are no federal laws that set humane care standards for animals in factory farms.

Not only would this contribute to animal welfare, but this could reduce air and water pollution.

Baby animals on factory farms such as birds, piglets, and calves, are usually mutilated in sensitive areas without any pain medication. (“US Ranked as Second Worst Nation in the World on New Animal Cruelty Index”) The animals don’t even have a one inch space between them; they spend their lives in the same space where they sleep, eat, and use the restroom, until it is time for them to be slaughtered and turned into human food.

According to Foodandwaterwatch.org, “cows on factory farms in Tulare County, California produce five times more waste than the New York City Metropolitan area.” If this is just one area of factory farming, imagine the millions of factory farms scattered all over the United States, destroying our environment. In fact, more than 1 million tons of manure is produced in factory farms each day. Because there is so much manure produced, nearby fields are unable to absorb the manure, creating high gas emissions. These man-made greenhouse gasses are released into the air, which is one of the main causes of global warming. As the Peta article “Other Health Risks of the Meat Industry” indicates, manure from factory farms contains toxins such as ammonia that pollute the air and is a respiratory hazard. Animals in factory farms are forced to spend their lives breathing in these dangerous toxins. Humans that inhale these dangerous pathogens, could suffer with respiratory problems and brain damage.

The large amount of manure produced on factory farms also contaminates nearby bodies of water. Rivers and lakes now carry the diseases that animals have from living in the poor factory conditions as well as the antibiotics they are given. Michael Gregor, M.D., Director of Public Health and Animal Agriculture, states in a Huffington Post article that not only are people who eat meat exposed to E. Coli and salmonella outbreaks, but our water which we have to drink to survive, could contain these pathogens as well. (E. Coli, Salmonella, and Other Deadly Bacteria and Pathogens in Food: Factory Farms Are the Reason)

Animals do not deserve to be treated like production products, they are living, breathing creatures with cognitive skills like us humans. Just like the well-being of animals should be important, our health should be as well. Together we can stop animal slaughtering and abuse as well as global warming.
