The U.S. encourages illegal immigration by issuing individual taxpayer-identification numbers (ITINs) to people who are ineligible to receive SSNs, which would allow them to work. Nevertheless, countless illegal immigrants "work and pay taxes", which are not possible without stealing the identities of legal, U.S. citizens, many of them children who are too young to work. When IRS employees encounter SSN / ITIN "mismatches", they are encouraged to look the other way. Consequently, these IRS employees are resorting to anonymous whistleblowing to expose the problem. This petition is intended to catapult this issue to the forefront of the illegal-immigration debate and to place pressure on our government to be proactive in the protection of citizens' identities and financial wellbeing.
Under 42 U.S. Code § 408, using a stolen Social Security number is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
